Calzones are one of those things that everyone seems to love. You can customize them however you want which makes them a food for anyone. I personally prefer pure cheese calzones with a side of marinara, but adding other things only makes them better!
Ingredients:
- 1 tablespoon active dry yeast
- 1 cup warm water
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 2 cups flour*
- 1 teaspoon salt
- If you don't want to worry about making the dough, ignore all previous ingredients and just use a premade dough!
- Whatever other fillings you would like in the calzone!

Recipe:
- Preheat your oven to 450F.
- Grease a baking sheet or use a pizza stone and set it aside for baking later.
- Add warm water to a large bowl, and add sugar and yeast to combine.
- Let this sit for 5 - 10 minutes.
- Add olive oil and mix until combined.
- Add the flour and salt, and transfer to a floured surface, and knead dough into a ball, making sure no clumps remain.
- If you are using a premade dough, start here and ignore all above steps involving the making of the dough.
- Roll your dough into a small circle and add your preferred ingredients just off from the center. You don't want them on the edge or your calzone may have some major leakage.
- Fold you dough over, encapsulating the insides.
- Cut off excess dough and and crimp edges to further prevent leakage.
- Lightly glaze top with oil and cut slices or poke holes into the top to vent out steam.
- Add to the oven for 10 - 15 minutes, and you're done!
Notes and things I learned along the way:
If you are wanting to add meats, you will need to precook any raw meats, as there may be a possibility of them not cooking thoroughly.
Adding low moisture cheeses will also help prevent the calzone from getting a soggy bottom after baking.
If adding a sauce into the calzone, it is best to add it on the bottom so it does not seep out of your ventilation holes. It may also just work better to keep the sauce in a dish on the side!
