Matcha is one of those things that I truly believe are timeless. While it is an acquired taste, matcha is a wonderfully earthy flavor and goes great even in ice cream form.
With this recipe I am obviously not making the tea leaves themselves (though in the future when I can I would love to update this), but I am just passing on a
great way to prepare the matcha tea!
Ingredients:
- 8oz water
- 1/4 teaspoon matcha powder
Recipe:
- Bring 8oz of water to a boil on the stove.
- Sift 1/4 teaspoon matcha powder into a bowl or a cup.
- Add 2oz of the boiling water the matcha powder.
- Using your matcha whisk (chasen), or an appropriate utensil, mix the matcha until it is frothy. Using a zigzag or back and forth motions work best, not circular. A fork or spoon will not work right.
- Add the remaining water. You can also use milks, if you'd like.
- Mix until frothy again, sweeten if you'd like, and you're done!
Notes and things I learned along the way:
Great additions to matcha green tea include:
- Sea salt
- Spices like coriander, cardamom, nutmeg, ginger, or cinnamon
- Citrus zest and juices like lemon, lime, and orange
- Various honeys; lavender and wildflower are my favorites, but any will do
- Maple syrup or other syrups
- Add the matcha to coffee
- Flowers like calendula, lavender, hibiscus, nasturtium, and pansies
Getting ethically sourced and native grown matcha is the way to go!
